School of Education in Art & Design
Fine Art & Design Teacher Training

Educators in the visual arts teach drawing, painting and sculpture, but are also skilled in our digital culture with animations, websites and other forms of interactivity. You can use these media and techniques as didactic instruments. In addition, you can teach students to design with and for these media. You also play a pivotal role as a teacher in your school or in extra-curricular activities, advising and encouraging students and colleagues to come up with new material. As a communications expert, you contribute to the educational innovation in your school. During your classes, you teach students to be open to the language of visual imagery to improve their self-confidence. You also actively take part in extra-curricular activities such as excursions, project weeks and visits to museums. For this reason, working on projects in secondary schools and extra-curricular activities form an important part of your studies at WdKA.

As a trainee instructor, you are made aware of your future role as a coach - in school and during extracurricular activities – in the use and development of our contemporary media culture. This course is set up in the form of integrated thematic education. Attention is given to your personal development in the arts, but a heavy emphasis is on acquiring didactic and educational capacities and theoretical insights. Through multidisciplinary products and your digital portfolio you may prove and show that you possess the required competences. Finally, you will specialise in a minor, for example, Art Education in Practice or Art Theory. Starting in the first year, you will do a number of work placements that will prepare you for your future job in a school. During the annual project week, you may meet and cooperate with future educators in music and dance from the  from the Rotterdam Conservatoire and the Rotterdam Dance Academy. You can also take part in the exchange programme and study, for example, in Luzern, Helsinki or Baltimore. After graduating, you can continue to study by taking the Master course Education in Arts at the Piet Zwart Institute.
