Fine Art

Fine Art is a universal form of expression. It contributes to our visual awareness, visual communication and the visual diversity of the private and public domains. Fine art is a cultural standard bearer and therefore plays an important part in society. Fine art propagates ornamental, functional, ceremonial, confrontational, aesthetic, controversial and politicised knowledge or can be simply entertaining. Art therefore has a significance beyond personal expression pur-sang. This function or role means that the realm of art constitutes a professional field: that of the fine artist.

Fine art has changed radically over recent decades in terms of media, methods and the materials used. Dividing lines have become blurred. Artists push back boundaries and define their own fields of interest. They continually define their position in the context of current developments in the global visual culture.

The Bachelor Fine Art degree programme is not divided into separate disciplines. You will work according to your personal artistic plan that you will detail and organise together with your tutors. Idea Development is the pivotal axis of your course. You will also devote a large amount of attention to new media. In the StadsLab, you will concentrate on practical work and carry out actual projects related to the utilisation of outdoor space in the Rotterdam metropolitan area. In the CrossLab media projects and in the special project weeks, you will work in interdisciplinary teams.

You will be expected to develop a feeling for tradition and the courage to experiment. To gain international experience, you can participate in the exchange programme and study at partner institutions, for example, in Berlin, Marseille or Vancouver. After completing your Bachelor's, you can continue to study, for example by progressing to the Master Fine Art course at the Piet Zwart Institute.
